Is there a more slept-on funk band from the 1970s than Con Funk Shun? Founded in Vallejo in the late 1960s, the band produced eleven albums over a decade, including Secrets, Loveshine, and Candy, all of which were certified gold, and still hold-up to this day. Despite this, many do not include them in the pantheon of pioneering funkateers along with Parliament/Funkadelic, The Ohio Players, and Tower of Power. The greatest irony of this is that Con Funk Shun vocalist/instrumentalist, Felton Pilate, went on to produce several albums for Oakland’s own MC Hammer, re-introducing the unique Con Funk Shun sound to a new generation. Lucky for us, the band is still touring, and we still have a chance to give it its due.
