Compañia Flamenca José Porcel: Gypsy Fire

When: Sat., Nov. 19, 8 p.m. 2011

In Spain, the living art of flamenco is shared among families, celebrated at festivals and ferias, and passed by masters to students. As a student in Seville and Madrid, José Porcel learned from some of the best: Martín Vargas, Isabel Quintero, Cristóbal Reyes, and PegroAzorín, to name a few. An international sensation, Porcel returns to Zellerbach Hall (Bancroft Way at Dana St., Berkeley) on Saturday, Nov. 19, with the West Coast premiere of Gypsy Fire, a dynamic program that includes flamenco's earliest Andalusian forms as well as vibrant contemporary styles. Music is as essential to flamenco as is movement, and a six-piece ensemble with vocals, guitar, flute, and percussion will conjure flamenco's power, passion, and joy in concert with Porcel's eight dancers. 8 p.m., $20-$58. 510-642-9988 or
