Rated NR 104 minutes 2017

For his first feature, Korean-American writer-editor-director Kogonada (just the one name, please) creates a thinking person’s romance between a young woman and a slightly older man, with veteran actor John Cho (Star Trek Beyond) as the latter and TV actress Haley Lu Richardson as the former, radiantly. But the film’s big selling point is its setting – the Modernist architecture and design destination of Columbus, Indiana, which features some 75 noteworthy buildings and public art installations, many of which make it on screen. All that form and function invigorate the slender story, as do the supporting parts by Parker Posey, Rory Culkin, and Michelle Forbes. Aesthetes and incurable romantics may actually find it inspirational. A wonderfully conceived character study (100 min., 2017, not rated) (K.V.)
