When: Sat., Aug. 1, 8 p.m. 2009

Claudia Russell, two-time finalist in the Kerrville New Folk songwriting competition, saw her self-released debut album, Song Food, rack up considerable airplay on folk and Americana stations nationwide. Her smooth alto and solid guitar skills are displayed in the service of original songs full of sharp insight and wry humor. The Richmond-based artist will be appearing with the folks that backed her up on her most recent album, Live Band Tonight -- Bruce Kaplan on guitar, mandolin, and vocals; Mark Petrella on bass; and Carl Byron on piano and accordion. Special guest Dan Navarro, of Lowen & Navarro, will add guitar and harmonies. A portion of the evening's proceeds will benefit the ALS Foundation in honor of Eric Lowen, who is currently battling ALS. Claudia Russell and the Folk Unlimited Orchestrawill headline the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley) on Saturday, Aug. 1. 8 p.m., $18.50, $19.50. TheFreight.org
