Rated R 105 minutes 2011

Contemporary Iran in an overheated teenage microcosm. In filmmaker Maryam Keshavarz’ soapy, sexy, political drama, a rich girl (Nikohl Boosheri) and her poor friend (Sarah Kazemy), both sixteen, experiment with lesbianism, drugs, naughty movies (like Milk), and anti-government protest, at least until the brother of one of them joins the morality police and causes a bother. Hypocrisy all over the place. Writer-director Keshavarz takes it very seriously, so we probably should too, especially when one of the girls levels the blame against her parents’ generation: “You all created this world for us, with your revolution.” One step away from hysteria.
