Chron Takes Tour of Oaksterdam U

Former Express writer Justin Berton walks through the Oaksterdam U classes on marijuana cultivation for the Chron, and the result is a deft, subtle portrait of the typical California pot grower. As attorneys Laurence Lichter and Chris Conrad walked the students through the strange legalities of dope growing (the state allows it, but the feds could take your house), the students were much more interested in the horticulture class, where a passionate argument broke out over whether to harvest the plants at eight weeks or eight-and-a-half. Course instructor Ilia Gvozdenovic tried to split the baby, promising her students, "The plants will talk to you. They'll tell you when the time is right." If those students don't pay closer attention to the dope laws, the US Attorney's office might talk to them too.
