Chitresh Das Dance Company

When: Sat., July 28, 8:30 p.m. 2012

Go beyond Bollywood and discover deeper riches of Indian dance on Saturday, July 28, when world-renowned Kathak master PanditChitresh Das performs during the Sanskriti Music and Dance Festival at Pleasanton's Amador Theater (1155 Santa Rita Rd.). Raised in India and celebrated as a child prodigy, Das now heads an eponymous dance company in San Francisco, to which he usually cedes the stage -- he hasn't performed solo in the Bay Area in four years. Kathak is the classical storytelling dance of Northern India, and Das' traditional solo dance centers on the tale Sita Haran, a parable of abduction and exile drawn from the epic The Ramayana. Involving percussive footwork, singing, poetry, and at times blinding speed, the solo is considered the epitome of Kathak mastery. Backing Das beat for syncopated beat are AbhijitBanerjee (tabla), RameshMisra (sarangi), DebashisSarkar (vocals), and JayantaBanerjee (sitar). 8:30 p.m., $20-$30. 415-333-9000 or Kathak.org
