Chinese Puzzle

Rated R 117 minutes 2014

A Parisian novelist and single father (Romain Duris) impulsively follows his ex-wife (Kelly Reilly) and their children to New York, where he gets mixed up in extra-marital, extra-curricular, extra-amusing, family-style hanky-panky with her, his lesbian best friend (Cécile de France) and her lover, his ex-girlfriend (Audrey Tautou) and her kids, a Chinese-American “immigration bride,” and a cheap shyster immigration lawyer, among others. It’s the sort of fast-paced farce the French call an auberge espagnole – and in fact this energetic, charming romantic workout is the third episode in the trilogy writer-director Cédric Klapisch began with the 2002 film L’Auberge Espagnole, with the same principal cast. You don’t really need to see the earlier films – Russian Dolls is number two – to have fun with this fluffy, travelogue-y rom-com, with Duris in top form (117 min.).
