Chinatown Night Market

When: Saturdays, 4-9 p.m. Continues through July 25 2009

By day, Oakland Chinatown is a bustling retail corridor, with its small grocers, bubble tea shops, and restaurants bearing pan-Asian cuisine. Merchants sell everything from yellow cake to herbal teas, ducks roast on spits in the windows, and the produce stands brim with green and purple vegetables. Oakland Chinatown also hosts some of the city's most popular annual events, including a summer street fest and a Lunar New Year bazaar. Last Saturday the district's chamber of commerce unveiled a new weekly night market, featuring chef demonstrations, live entertainment, and vendors from local businesses. Running every Saturday (except July 4) through July 25, it will help bring more foot traffic to an area that's well-loved by the cheap eats crowd, but underappreciated at large. 4-9 p.m. Free.
