Childish Gambino

When: Thu., April 19, 8 p.m. 2012

The Village Voice pretty much hit the nail on the head last spring when it ran a cover story with the headline "Donald Glover Is More Talented Than You": Glover -- who raps under the name Childish Gambino and will be headlining The Fox Theater (1907 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Thursday, Apr. 19 -- isn't just more talented than you or me; it's safe to say he's more talented than the vast majority of humans. Let me count the ways: He landed a gig writing for 30 Rock while he was still at NYU, for which he won a Writer's Guild of America award and after which he exploded into acting with a role as one of Community's most consistently funny characters. He's also a DJ, a sketch comedian, a Gap model (!), and -- most actually relevant to the subject matter at hand -- a fairly fantastic rapper. Last year's Camp contained shades of Jay-Z in its gospel samples and explosive beats, of College Dropout-era Kanye in its self-aware and winkingly cerebral lyrics, of Lil Wayne in its organic-sounding flow -- and suffice it to say, comparing him to those three is just about the greatest compliment you can bestow on a newbie rapper. Catch him now before he invariably gets too big for venues like The Fox. 8 p.m., sold out, but check Craigslist. TheFoxOakland.com
