Chick Corea Trio with Christian McBride and Brian Blade

When: Oct. 11-14, 8 & 10 p.m. 2010

Jazz artists have reinvented the traditional piano-bass-drum trio in recent years. TheyÕre using the piano as a percussion instrument, rather than melodic drapery. TheyÕve made the division of labor more even. TheyÕve become more interdependent. A prime example would be pianist Chick CoreaÕs new trio, which features not one but three A-list stars: Corea of course, alongside drummer Brian Blade and bassist Christian McBride. As anyone who saw them at Monterey Jazz Fest will attest, these guys are smokinÕ. Corea has a long history of coming up with original leader-sideman combinations (a few years ago he combined bassist Avishai Cohen with drummer Jeff Ballard), and this one might be his best yet. Blade is one of the most dynamic groove-keepers in the business, McBride has gone from straight-head to super funky in the last few years, and if youÕve never seen Corea manhandle his instrument, youÕre in for a treat. At Oakland YoshiÕs (510 Embarcadero) Monday-Thursday, October 11-14. Shows at 8 & 10 p.m. $60-$65 Yoshis.com
