When: Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. Continues through April 12 2008

A whole lot of local companies are doing Cabaret this spring, so it's nice to see Altarena Playhouse mixing it up a bit by putting on Kander and Ebb's later c-word hit. Chicago was a much slower success, considering that its 1975 debut came and went without much notice, and it didn't make it big until a 1996 revival that's still running on Broadway and the hit 2002 movie version that followed. Really, what's not to like about Roaring Twenties razzle-dazzle and convicted murderesses on death row? Director/choreographer Christina Lazo's production in the cozy Alameda community theater-in-the-round features Jessica Rosa as gunslinging showgirl Roxie Hart and Donna Rapa-Olsen as vampy Velma Kelly. March 7 through April 12 at Altarena Playhouse (1409 High St., Alameda) or 510-523-1553.
