Congenial gastro-sitcom has middle-of-the-road, family-style -- despite the “R” for language -- fun with the story of a frustrated LA restaurant chef named Carl (Jon Favreau, who also writes and directs), bedeviled by a nasty food critic (Oliver Platt) and a pushy boss (Dustin Hoffman), who chucks it all to launch a Cubano-sandwich food truck. The cast is as rich and filling as the mounds of fried food being prepared – Sofia Vergara as Carl’s ultra-friendly ex; John Leguizamo as Carl’s culinary sidekick; Scarlett Johansson as the front-of-the-house; Robert Downey Jr., very funny as the ex’s ex; Bobby Cannavale as a kitchen wisecracker; and Emjay Anthony as Carl’s young son, who learns the biz while getting some up-close with his part-time dad. Guaranteed to make you hungry (115 min.).
