Chasing Madoff

Rated NR 91 minutes 2011

This well constructed but standard-brand “outrage doc” on the Bernard Madoff investment swindle of 2008 reserves much of its ire for the Securities and Exchange Commission, the government agency that should have heeded the warnings about Madoff, according to filmmaker Jeff Prosserman. The doc takes the form of an investigative piece, with fraud examiner Harry Markopolos of Boston relating the story of how he essentially followed Madoff around for years before his suspicions paid off. Among Markopolos’ conclusions: Madoff’s enablers, which include some three hundred firms that fed him a steady diet of sucker investors for his Ponzi scheme, have largely gotten off scot-free. Madoff himself is serving a 150-year sentence. Based on Prosserman’s book. (91 min.)
