Charming Disaster dances quietly through the dark side of life, investigating themes of murder, mortality, paranormal activity, and looming apocalypse. The duo — singer/ukulele player Ellia Bisker and singer/guitarist Jeff Morris — presents its gloomy portraits with understated, mostly acoustic playing, and soft, peaceful harmonies, often sounding like a single voice. Spells & Rituals, its most recent album, also delves into divination, with tunes loosely based on the images of a deck of Tarot cards and classical horror films like The Bride of Frankenstein. The arrangements are musically expansive, combining the sounds of dissonant Eastern European folk melodies, surf music, rock, blues and the duo’s own skewed brand of gospel. Its current tour will incorporate Tarot readings, letting the order of the cards determine the songs they’ll be playing.
