Berkeley high alum and former Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy guitarist Charlie Hunter returns this week for a homecoming at Yoshi's, right on the heels of fellow fusion titan John Scofield. Once again, this Jack London Square night club is wooing a jam band crowd that would normally pack the Independent -- on a week that Cal isn't in session. But Hunter has a lot of street cred and an ardent following in the EastBay, along with other qualities that eluded the similarly-positioned Marco Benevento. His latest album Mistico, which dropped on Concord this summer, shows what fusion sounds like when it's played by artists with a strong groove and actual chops. It peaks with the title track, a rumbly, feedback-laced blues tune with slick piano lines and a spaghetti western feel. See for yourself: A free trade enthusiast, Hunter posts a lot of tunes on his web site (CharlieHunter.com) for free. Charlie Hunter performs a five-day run , Wednesday, Dec. 10 through Sunday, Dec. 23, at 8 and 10 p.m., and 7 and 9 p.m. on Sunday. $16-$24. Yoshis.com
