Charlie Hunter Trio

When: Tue., Dec. 16, 8 & 10 p.m. and Wed., Dec. 17, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008

Berkeley-raised Charlie Hunter returns to town with his new trio, featuring Erik Deutsch on keys and Tony Mason on drums. Hunter's fret-board wizardry on his self-designed seven- and eight-string guitars has made him one of today's top players, an adventurous musician at home with jazz, funk, reggae, samba, and anything else that strikes his fancy. His solos are always sharp and concise, blending a rhythmic and melodic sensibility that's all his own. Mason's drumming is on the money, and the inventive keyboard work of Deutsch keeps the pot bubbling. They'll probably feature plenty of tunes from their new self-released CD Baboon Strength when they perform at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland, Dec. 16-17; 1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco, Dec. 18-21). $12-$28.
