Classical & Opera

When: Tue., Sept. 21, 8 p.m. 2010

What a way to start a season! America's premiere professional male vocal ensemble, Chanticleer, is heading Out of this World with a performance of music "inspired by the sun, the moon, the stars and the universe beyond." High on the list of explorations is the world premiere of Mason Bates' Observer in the Magellanic Cloud. Given how fabulous Bates' last piece for Chanticleer was, this could be a major winner. Also on the program are a new arrangement of Cells Planets by Erica Lloyd of Little Grey Girlfriend, and pieces by everyone from Monteverdi to Mahler, with a little Britten, Mechem, Hopkins, and Weill thrown in for spice. Chanticleer performs on Thursday, Sept. 21, at Lesher Center for the Arts (1601 Civic Dr., Walnut Creek). 8 p.m., $20-44, with discounts for groups, students, and seniors. 415-392-4400 or
