ChananGertraide's photographs are lovely and poised landscapes of sunflower fields, winding rivers, and ragged, grazing sheep. They are not the images we generally get of the Israeli landscape, and Gertraide almost acknowledges this in certain shots, such as "Near Gaza Strip." Here, vibrant red flowers dot the calm green landscape growing over a crumbling wall. Still, his richly lit, fully saturated colors and fluid compositions make it clear that he is more interested in "this on-going game between light and landscape" than in political allegory. His "Sunflowers in Moonlight" is especially striking in this regard -- the flowers stand in dark obscurity, but for a few which burst into light, like the little suns of their names. Gertraide will speak about his work at the Jewish Community Center of the East Bay on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Through Dec. 2 at the Jewish Community Center of the East Bay, 1414 Walnut St., Berkeley.
