Cesar Chavez

Rated PG-13 101 minutes 2014

Plain, straightforward, but never dull and always illuminating, this biography of the iconic labor organizer and civil rights leader fills us in on Chavez’ career headlines, beginning with the founding of the National Farm Workers Association in Delano, Kern County, through the NFWA’s victory over tight-fisted growers and up-front racial bigotry. As with Gandhi, Mandela, and Milk, Chavez is shown to steadfastly insist on nonviolence no matter what the provocation, and Michael Peña’s performance in the title role has the same earnest flavor as those mens’ legends, bolstered by the smart direction of actor-turned-filmmaker Diego Luna. America Ferrera and Rosario Dawson are also strong in support, with John Malkovich coming close to stealing the entire movie as a nefarious vegetable grower. A history lesson that’s still being played out. Screenplay by Keir Pearson and Timothy J. Sexton (98 min.).
