The best way to look at this is as an acting exercise. In a small town in Tuscany, a visiting British art expert named James (William Schimmel) meets a French woman named Marie who runs an art gallery (Juliette Binoche), and they drive off for some sightseeing. Midway through the afternoon, Marie begins pretending – to others at first but then to James – that she and James are a fifteen-year married couple with issues. He goes along, up to a point. It’s another Abbas Kiarostami drama concerned more with investigating the questions of identity and the “authentic” than with who-what-when-where. As long as your patience holds, it’s mildly diverting. Looks like something of an “award project” for the Iranian international writer-director of White Balloon and Taste of Cherry. (106 min.)
