When: Dec. 7-Jan. 2 2008
Tim Swischuk celebrates the lo-fi and the everyday in his "Cellpholocation" at Lucky JuJu Pinball Gallery. Upon discovering that his cell-phone had an embedded camera, Swischuk set out to document his daily life, producing large mosaic posters of the resulting images. They feature sites familiar to denizens of the East Bay, particularly Alameda -- the Encinal High School jet plane, the ferry embankment, the Lucky 13 bar on Park Street -- as well as other sites in the Bay Area that could almost be anywhere: San Francisco Airport's moving walkways, cheap plastic dolls in 99 cent stores, a photo of a wedding photo being shot. Swischuk's images are a kind of catalog of daily sightings, recognizable views transformed by his adept eye for line and color, and by their sheer volume -- suddenly one realizes just how much there is to see, and how even the few pixels afforded a cell phone can reframe the world and give it a new stillness in all its hurry. "Cellpholocation" runs through January 2 at Lucky JuJu, 713 Santa Clara Ave., Alameda. Ujuju.com or 510-205-9793.
