Celebrating MLK In the Name of Love

When: Sun., Jan. 19, 7-9:30 p.m. 2020

For almost two decades, the Bay Area music scene has started the new year with a powerful dose of soul courtesy of Living Jazz’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, “In the Name of Love.” The 18th-annual concert, which returns to the Oakland Scottish Rite Center, focuses on the music of soul legend Sam Cooke (who died just four months before King). “A Change Is Gonna Come” features a dazzling constellation of vocal talent, including Tony Lindsay, Raz Kennedy, Tiffany Austin, Tammi Brown, and Clif Payne accompanied by an equally formidable band with pianist Frank Martin, bassist Troy Lampkins, drummer Ruthie Price, and guitarist Shelley Doty. The program also features the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and Oakland grade schoolers participating in the Living Jazz Children’s Project (the project for which concert proceeds are slated).
