When: Jan. 5-Feb. 27 2011

Debs, Douglass, Goldman, Huerta, Robeson, Sandino, Tubman, and Sacco and Vanzetti may be better known, but Dr. Marie Equi, Aunt Molly Jackson, Jane Jacobs, WangariMaathai, Chico Mendes, Primo Tapia, the Bonus Marchers, the Co-Madres, the Durruti Column, the White Rose, and the Amazon Army are equally inspiring activists, gadflies, and insurrectionists. Josh McPhee'sCelebrate People's History project, which has memorialized such revolutionary dissidents for thirteen years, is the subject of a new book as well as of this show of some fifty posters. Works by the Bay Area's Jesus Barraza, Melanie Cervantes, Eric Drooker, Art Hazelwood, Fernando Marti, Claude Moller, and JosSancesare included. Did you know that Walt Disney alleged communist influence over the cartoon animators' union before the House Un-American Activities Committee?! Celebrate People's History runs through February 27 at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). Sales proceeds benefit Dara Greenwald, McPhee's partner, who is battling cancer. 510-849-2568 or
