Celebrate Love at Oakland City Hall Tonight

It's shaping up to be the summer of love in the East Bay.

Starting at 6 pm tonight, couples wanting to say their "I do's" can head to Oakland City Hall and celebrate the return of same-sex marriage to California. It'll be free of charge; couples just need to come with a marriage license, which are available at the county clerk's office through 4 pm. (More information about obtaining a license here.)

Celebrations are open to any couple, regardless of sexual orientation. Clergy from a variety of different faiths will be available to officiate weddings as well. A reception following the ceremonies will take place outside City Hall, stocked with sweets, cupcakes and cakes, thanks to donations from local businesses. Photographers will be on hand, too.

Reservations aren't required, but couples are encouraged to email Hatzune Aguilar Sanchez, the City's community services manager, at HAguilar@oaklandnet.com, so that volunteers can plan anticipate how many marriages will take place tonight.

"Regardless of how many couples we marry or don't marry, the intention is a larger celebration of equality," Sanchez says. "It's a celebration of true love."
