Casino Jack

Rated R 108 minutes 2010

Bad enough that this lame comic drama was the second film of 2010 to deal with the career of G.W. Bush-era king-lobbyist and convicted grafter Jack Abramoff – it’s equally loathsome in its own right as an attempt to humanize a walking decay germ. Kevin Spacey plumbs new depths of slick sleaze in the role of DC fixer Abramoff, who scammed Native American casino owners and legislators with equal ease and made millions. The late George Hickenlooper, who directed, and writer Norman Snider, are trying to make a black comedy about American government corruption, à la Charlie Wilson’s War, but nothing jells except Jon Lovitz’ performance as an Abramoff crony. Also with Barry Pepper and Kelly Preston. Handle with tongs. (108 min.)
