Soul, Funk, R&B, & Hip-Hop

When: Fri., June 27, 8 p.m. 2008

Known for his vibrato-prone baritone and artful use of acoustic and electric instrumentation, New York-raised R&B singer Case is perhaps the biggest celebrity booking to grace Maxwell's Lounge (341 13th St.) this year, offering proof that the newbie Oakland club -- which recently featured ex-Tower of Power frontman Lenny Williams and celebrated soul-rock singer Martin Luther -- has truly stepped up its game. Case will preside over Friday, June 27's benefit concert for the J4L Foundation Hope for Our Youth,(HFOY) HIV/AIDS National Awareness Campaign. Also featuring R&B DJ Mel B EZ and Bay Area singer Lolita Sweet, the concert will provide listeners with an opportunity to hear A-list performers and up-and-coming balladeers in a supper-club setting. 8 p.m., $15-$45.
