Rated R 79 minutes 2011

Eighty minutes of entertaining bickering. Working on a suburban Paris soundstage to stand in for a Brooklyn, New York apartment, director Roman Polanski deals himself four aces — actors Christoph Waltz, Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, and John C. Reilly — as nervous, self-centered parents trying their best to be civilized in settling a fight between their unseen adolescent sons. Naturally the grownups are more childish than the kids could ever be, with Waltz and Foster leading the charge. The screenplay was adapted by Polanski and French playwright Yasmina Reza from her stage play God of Carnage, and it displays the veteran director’s knack for ensemble pieces as the quartet crashes around the one-room set spilling whiskey and stepping on each others’ toes. (80 min.)
