Rated PG 2008

Four bubbly women interact amiably with each other and their customers in a Beirut beauty parlor, circa 1980. It’s the only place they feel liberated, and director Nadine Labaki (who also plays Layale, the Lebanese Christian owner of the salon) throws in odds and ends of social commentary to remind us that the women’s freedom is limited –- they all have to answer to a man sooner or later. More than a mere chick flick, but not quite a political thriller. Costarring Yasmine Al Masri, Johanna Moukarzel, and Gisèle Aouad, and written by Labaki, Jihad Hojeily, and Rodney Al Haddad (96 min., 2007).
