Cannabis Author Showcase IV

When: Thu., Sept. 17, 6 p.m. 2015

The Express’ Legalization Nation weed blog writer and The Hash Podcast host David Downs is also the host of a talk show-like literary series called the Cannabis Author Showcase. The next edition of the event, which will take place at the Rock Steady (1741 San Pablo Ave., Oakland) on September 17 at 6 p.m., will host a hefty lineup. Harborside Health Center’s Stephen DeAngelo will be there to talk about his debut memoir, The Cannabis Manifesto, and do a preview book sale and signing (the official release is September 22). Ellen Komp, a local author and activist will also be there, presenting her new book Tokin’ Women, a history of famous women from the past 4,000 years who — you guessed it — loved to smoke weed. Michael Backes, the author of the book Cannabis Pharmacy, and Cheri Sicard, the author of the women’s issues cannabis book Mary Jane, will also be guests. According to Komp, the event falls on the 150th anniversary of Mark Twain’s “Stoned Stroll,” when Mark Twain was seen by a San Francisco Chronicle reporter walking around the city high with Confessions of a Hasheesh Eater author Fitz Hugh Ludlow, to be reported in the paper the following morning. I guess that’s a good enough reason to celebrate.
