Cal's Pals

When: Sun., April 27, 4:30 p.m. 2008

Vibist Cal Tjader started out as Dave Brubeck's original drummer, then launched his own band in the early '50s that blazed the trail and set the standard for great West Coast Latin jazz in the '60s and '70s, before his early death in 1982. Cal's Pals, a one-time grouping of some of his many illustrious bandmates, will convene in a tribute to Tjader and his music on Sunday, April 27, in the comfy performance room of the Jazzschool (2087 Addison St., Berkeley). The show also celebrates the Tjader family's donation of Tjader's vibraphone to the Jazzschool. The band includes pianist Mark Levine, bassist Rob Fischer, drummer Vince Lateano, Roger Glenn on flute and percussion, conga player Willie Colon, and Jon Erickson on vibes. 4:30 p.m., $18.
