California State Judo Championships

When: May 29-30, 2:30 p.m. 2010

You'll have to cross the bridge or the bay to get there, but don't miss the chance to see the best the state has to offer in judo competition. The California State Judo Championships happen Saturday and Sunday, May 29 and 30, at City College of San Francisco (50 Phelan Ave., San Francisco). Saturday's competition has a 2:30 p.m. start, and features senior-level practitioners ranging from white belts to masters' level. On Sunday, starting at 9 a.m., it's the bantam and juvenile battlers. The variety of bouts is matched only by the sheer number of matches being contested. The sport, which takes its name from its native Japan, means "the gentle way." Check it out and see if it translates for you. $7, free for twelve and under. CalJudoInc.com
