Cal: Tree-Sitters Will Pay

Gosh, it looks like UC Berkeley's kinda mad. When the roughly twenty activists decided to hamstring Cal's plans to build a new sports center by occupying oak trees in its path, they probably didn't expect to actually be held liable for their little prank. But now, UC Berkeley officials are intent upon making them pay for the cost of guarding them during the protest and extracting at the conclusion. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, each tree-sitter faces a potential fine of $10,000. As for whether they'll be able to beat the rap, the tree-sitters' attorney, Dennis Cunningham, was rather glum. "You were either up in the trees or not" he says. "What's to argue?"
