Most US holidays have turned into excuses for gross marketing techniques and coercision into buying useless junk. But there's a good excuse on Earth Day (April 22), as increasingly, consumers are realizing that where they spend their dollars can and does make a difference. In this week's edition of Buy Curious, check out the many Earth-friendly events happening around the bay, where you can purchase items to benefit yourself and the planet. Whether you want to shop for green houseware, organic vegetables, or simply pick up trash in your neighborhood, there's something to suit everyone's Earth Day tastes this weekend.

Earth Day Sale
The Treehouse, located on College Ave in the Elmwood, specializes in green gifts. So this Earth Day, the store is hosting its first annual Earth Day Sale, where you can enjoy 20 percent off all merchandise, half-off all clearance items, and refreshments.

Spend a Buck, Save a Tortoise
Used-clothing chain Buffalo Exchange will host a Dollar Day Sale this weekend to benefit the Pinta tortoise known as Lonesome George (he's the only one left). All proceeds from items offered for a buck will go to Galapagos Conservancy to fund a project to repopulate Pinta Island with giant saddleback tortoises.
When: April 19. Store hours: Mon.-Sat. 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

Coats for Cubs
While you're at it, donate any real-fur items (in any condition), which will be donated to the Humane Society to be used as bedding and comfort to orphaned and injured wildlife. (Was that grandma?)

Berkeley Earth Day
Glorify greenness in the center of Berkeley at Civic Center Park for Berkeley's Earth Day Fair. Check out more than 150 booths, plus cooking demonstrations, live performances, and electric and biodiesel car exhibits. All for free.

West County Earth Day
More music, food, entertainment, and a tour of a recycling plant at West County's Earth Day Festival. Free.

Farmers' Markets
They happen year-round, but if you've never been to one, take the Earth Day excuse and attend one in your neighborhood to stock up on locally produced fruits, vegetables, and other goodies.

Baby clothes can be ridiculously expensive, especially considering the lil' tots grow out of them practically by the time you bring them home, and then promptly roll around in Cheetos.
