Butterflies Are Free

When: Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. Continues through July 19 2008

Taking over the 49-seat Walnut Creek theater recently vacated by the late Playhouse West, Diablo Actors Ensemble kicks off its first season in its own space with Butterflies Are Free, Leonard Gershe's 1969 romantic comedy about a blind aspiring songwriter in a cramped Greenwich Village apartment, his overprotective mother, and his beautiful, free-spirited neighbor, which also became a 1972 Goldie Hawn flick set in San Francisco. Directed by artistic director Scott Fryer, the show stars Contra Costa comic staple Joel Roster, familiar from many Contra Costa Musical Theater and Town Hall Theatre shows, and Ginny Wehrmeister, recently seen in Town Hall's Bleacher Bums. June 13 through July 19 at Diablo Actors Ensemble Theatre (1345 Locust St., Walnut Creek) or 925-482-5110.
