Burlesque 'n Brass

When: Sat., March 7, 9 p.m. 2009

Fat Tuesday came and went but Oakland can never get enough Mardi Gras. In Oakland, the romance of old-fashioned burlesque dance troupes, second line processions, and New Orleans brass bands has generated its own cult following, which is big enough to sustain the weekly HubbaHubba Burlesque nights at the Uptown Nightclub, and to ensure that local brass bands like Blue Bone Express keep a full gig schedule. On Saturday, March 7, check out the seven-piece Blue Bone ensemble along with Hot Pink Feathers, a cabaret dance group that performs in a variety of traditional and vintage styles, including samba, Bollywood, and can can -- usually in showgirl costumes with spangles and feather boas. They'll crowd the stage at this month's edition of "Burlesque 'n Brass," billed as a "Copacabana-meets-the French Quarter"-style blend of Rio and New Orleans, at Oakland's Cafe Van Kleef (1621 Telegraph Ave.). 9 p.m., $10.
