Brown Boi Project Book Launch Party

When: Fri., Aug. 19, 8:30 p.m. 2011

When it comes to health, the LGBT community has particular needs, but, as noted in this week's cover story, the modern health-care system often alienates this population, which can lead to health disparities. Launched a couple years ago, the Brown Boi Project aims to improve the lives of "young masculine of center womyn, trans men, and straight men of color." As part of its efforts, the group has put together a health guide. Called Freeing Ourselves: A Guide to Health and Self Love for Brown Bois, the book aims to "create new language for our identities and experiences and educate ourselves on our health traditions" in order to "shift the power to care for our bodies, minds, and spirits from others back to ourselves." The authors will be on hand to celebrate the book launch with a signing at Hibiscus restaurant (1745 San Pablo Ave., Oakland) on Friday, Aug. 19. Produced in conjunction with the Butch Voices Conference. 8:30 p.m., free.
