Hidden away on the edge of the Oakland Estuary, Brotzeit Lokal is a rare find: a view restaurant without the usual trappings of a view restaurant. There are no fancy linens or wallet-busting prices, but there also isn’t a bad seat in the house, and the traditional German beer-hall fare is much better than it needs to be. By far the most popular menu items are the house-made sausages, which range from good to very good. The well-spiced jalapeño chicken sausage and the remarkably juicy bockwurst are especially tasty. Heartier eaters won’t want to miss the Eisbein, a whole, massive pork trotter that’s brined, braised until tender, and then smoked like a ham. It’s enough food for four hungry people, and the closest thing you’ll find to Christmas dinner all year long.
The kitchen stops serving food 1.5 hours before closing time.
