More sub-Sirk-ian soap from Pedro Almodóvar, who was once a must-see filmmaker. Almodóvar has long been accused of remaking the same movie over and over, and this plodding, tongue-in-cheek melodrama about a blind, lovelorn author (Lluis Homar), his lost sweetheart (Penelope Cruz), his loyal assistant and friend (Blanca Portillo), and the assistant’s son (Tamar Novas) fits the profile. A car crash, attempted murder, muchas drogas, criss-crossing jealousies, and numerous flashbacks and forwards cannot obscure the lack of inspiration in Almodóvar’s writing. Also with José Luis Gómez (127 min.).
