Braza! Featuring DJ Nuts

When: Fri., Aug. 5, 10 p.m. 2011

Within a few years of hip-hop's genesis in the United States, parallel scenes sprouted up in many other parts of the world â€â€ including São Paulo, Brazil, where turntables and drum machines formed an unlikely marriage with samba, bossa nova, and tropicalia. Thus emerged such artists as DJ Nuts, a São Paulo native who was anointed the country's turntablist champion back in 2000, and who's since consolidated his career as a producer. His list of collaborators includes famed Brazilian rapper Marcelo D2, as well as canonical artists like João Donato, Trio Mocotó, Gilberto Gil, and Dom Um Romão. He'll make a rare San Francisco appearance this week alongside DJs Elan, Vanka, and Kento, for a special "hip-hop con samba" event, featuring Afro-Latin and American funk samples, rich horn sections, Portuguese vocalists, and sounds of wildlife, all shellacked with club-ready dance beats. At Som (2925 16th St., San Francisco) on Friday, Aug. 5. 10 pm., $5 before 11 p.m., $10 thereafter; ladies free before 11 p.m. BrazaSF.com.
