Brass Menažeri

When: Fri., Aug. 27 2010

Brass Menažeri has played the music of Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, and assorted Eastern Eurpoen gypsy cultures for almost a decade. Trumpeter, clarinetist and bandleader Peter Jaques was inspired by an 11/4 piece he heard at the Eastern European Folk Life camp and stared investigating Balkan music and culture. He took the music he found and played it with an American perspective that includes jazz, rock and plenty of improvisation. The nine-member group is one of the hottest Balkan bands in the Bay Area, known for odd dance meters, passionate vocals and flights of improvisational fancy. A guaranteed crowd pleaser. Brass Menažeri plays Friday, August 27 at Ashkenaz (1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley). 9 p.m., $12
