Brainwash Movie Festival

When: Sat., Aug. 7, 9 p.m., Fri., Aug. 13, 9 p.m. and Sat., Aug. 14, 9 p.m. 2010

Call it a drive-in for the DIY generation. The Brainwash Movie Festival -- opening Saturday, Aug. 7, and continuing through next weekend -- represents a new movie-watching model: It's less self-serious than your typical juried festival, but bound to be a lot more interesting than whatever's playing at the local multiplex. It's got the old-school ambience of a classic drive-in, but none of the treacly nostalgia. Audience members are invited to drive in, bike in, or walk in to the venue, a repurposed parking lot at MandelaVillageArtsCenter (1357 5th St.) in West Oakland. Audio for the films will be broadcast via FM radio as well as through speakers. This year's festival includes 22 shorts and one feature in various genres; check website for descriptions and a full schedule. August 7, 13, and 14 at 9 p.m.; $10 per night, discount pass available. 510-684-6100 or
