Miami/Atlanta band Torche established itself as a throbbing vein in the sludgey/stoner/doom scene on its 2005 self-titled debut. Dirty, droning, and bottom-heavy, yet with a pop sensibility, Torche took a decidedly more dynamic (and ambitious) approach to its follow-up, 2008's Meanderthal. Released by the venerable Hydra Head label, the album hints at Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, QOTSA, and myriad others; yet melodic underpinnings still remain the constant, whether under the weight of bone-crushing riffs or entrenched in singer Steve Brooks' penchant for soaring harmonies. Not surprisingly, many critics were quick to label Meanderthal one the best albums of the year -- and that was back in April. See what the fuss is about when Torche opens for Boris at the GreatAmericanMusic Hall(859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco), with Lair of the Minotaur, on Saturday, August 2. 9 p.m., $17.
