Yesterday at 5 p.m., Oakland hip-hop emcee Boots Riley sent out a tweet to announce that his father Walter Riley is alive and well, and presumably still carrying out mission work in Port-au-Prince. Riley had gone missing in Haiti in the wake of a devastating 7.0 earthquake which hit the region on Monday. He is there with his wife, Barbara Rhine and stepdaughter Selena, according to a Faceook note posted by OaklandSeen. The family is currently working with an organization called Haiti Action.
Riley is an activist and lawyer for the Oakland Post newspaper. Rhine, also a lawyer, has represented the United Farmworkers’ Union and taught law at San Francisco’s Golden Gate University. Their family also includes ABC News reporter Denise James.
