Bone Sickness and Lawless

When: Mon., Oct. 22, 6 p.m. 2012

The metal scene seems to be in a rut these days. Maybe it's the overabundance of metalcore bands, or -- yeah, that's it. But there are some that are keeping the spirit of old-school metal alive and one of those is local band Lawless, a new project featuring three members of Acephalix that plays a crusty-punk form of death metal and which, thankfully, has no intentions of prog-ifying its songs. It's not terribly different from Acephalix (riffs lifted from the gutter and deep, throaty vocals played at a chugging, mid-tempo gallop), but, then again, this isn't about reinvention. To celebrate the release of its new three-track cassette (which was recorded in May by local engineer/musician Jeff "Leppard" Davis at Lennon Studios, a mere month before he was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident), the band will play its debut show at Eli's Mile High Club (3629 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland) with Gas Kill and Olympia, Washington's Bone Sickness. 6 p.m., $TBA.
