At San Leandro’s Bluebird Pizzeria, a New York-style pizza joint with New Jersey roots, the walls are lined with knickknacks from the owner Fran Leidy’s East Coast upbringing: a New Jersey license plate, a framed album cover of Bruce Springsteen's Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ, and a photo of Babe Ruth. Most importantly, the restaurant serves East Coast-style pizza that’s good enough to merit a special trip. The pizzas are crunchy-bottomed and pleasantly soft and chewy, with a tangy-sweet New York-style tomato sauce — unless you opt for the garlicky, tomato-free white pie, which is equally worthy. There are usually several by-the-slice options, among which the thick, rectangular “grandma” slices are hard to resist. But perhaps the best thing about Bluebird is how down-to-earth the place is — how no one puts on airs, regulars are greeted by name, and the quality of the food speaks for itself.
