Rated R 118 minutes 2008

Oh great, an allegorical sci-fi disaster flick. One by one, an epidemic of infectious blindness randomly strikes most of the inhabitants of an unnamed city — shot in Uruguay, Brazil, and Canada — and the newly blind, including a doctor (Mark Ruffalo) and his sighted wife (Julianne Moore), are herded by nervous authorities into a prison. Things deteriorate from there. That especially means the screenplay, by actor-turned-scenarist Don McKellar from the novel by José Saramago, directed dully by Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Constant Gardener). It doesn't neglect a cliché. Also in the badly under-utilized (except for Moore and Ruffalo) cast: Alice Braga, Gael García Bernal, Danny Glover, Yoshino Kimura, and Maury Chaykin (120 min.).
