Blasted Canyons

When: Fri., Aug. 19, 9 p.m. 2011

Another band bubbling up from the Bay Area garage rock scene, Blasted Canyons serves up this style with all the familiar tropes: fuzz, distortion, reverb, and straight-forward, punkish riffs -- but with enough energy to ignite a small forest fire. The trio -- featuring Matt Jones, formerly of Bare Wires -- formed just last year and has already released its first album, on John Dwyer's (Thee Oh Sees) Castle Face Records. It's got some surprisingly heavy moments, like "The Artist Formerly Known as Satan" and "Death and a Half," which sound more sludgy (and stone-y) than sun-baked. The band says its music is appropriate for "drinkin' beers in a 7-Eleven parking lot, chillin' on the hood of your Firebird," which proves that even if one's aspirations are low, the results can be high. On Friday, Aug. 19, at Brick & MortarMusic Hall (1710 Mission St., San Francisco), with Terry Malts and Pow! 9 p.m., $5, $8.
