Black Souls

Rated NR 103 minutes 2014

Italian director Francesco Munzi tries for something new in this familiar-looking – up to a point – crime story about a family of ‘Ndrangheta drug smugglers from Calabria and their feud with a rival clan. The strategy succeeds, thanks to the character acting of Fabrizio Ferracane and Peppino Mattozza as two of the Carbone brothers, trying to contain the wild-card violence of a younger, hotter-headed Carbone (Giuseppe Fumo). The settings are ultra-realistic, shot on location in Southern Italy, but it’s the screenplay, adapted by Munzi and two other writers from a novel by Gioacchino Criaco, that grabs our attention. An advancement along the lines of Matteo Garrone’s trend-setting Neapolitan mob chronicle Gomorrah, the Calabrian viewpoint is even bleaker. Worlds away from American-style gangster pics (103 min.).
