Earlier this year, BJ the Chicago Kid released his debut album In My Mind, an eclectic record that combines vintage funk, soul, and gospel sounds with contemporary R&B vocal styles and syrupy synths and AutoTune. Throughout the album, BJ’s lyrics narrate the inner conflicts of someone who grew up with a religious background and is trying to stay true to his roots while coming of age, navigating relationships, and partying. Where BJ truly stands out though, are his ballads such as “Heart Crush” and “Jeremiah/World Needs More Love,” which show off the emotive qualities of his velvety voice. The crooner recently launched his world tour to promote In My Mind, and his Oakland stop is at The New Parish on August 2 with support from singer Tish Hyman.
